Ras Kwame
Champion of new UK music
Ras Kwame has a vast musical heritage - he was one half of garage outfit M-Dubs, founder of record labels Baby Shack and International Rude Bwoy Recordings, as well as presenting his hugely respected 100% Homegrown show on Radio 1Xtra for almost 10 years
Ras Kwame began his career some 15 years ago as a DJ at university whilst studying Economics.
Having founded West London's Sugar Shack record store/recording studio, Ras worked as one half of UK Garage production outfit M-Dubs when he then founded record label Baby Shack in 1994. Baby Shack has been hugely successful, specialising in UK garage and being responsible for some huge garage anthems.
In 2001, Ras launched International Rude Bwoy Recordings which maintains a UK black music output with a variety of styles ranging from hip hop to garage. During this time, Ras was making a name for himself as a club DJ playing Hip Hop, RnB and Reggae and as soon progressed to promoting for Kiss FM's groundbreaking Starlight Club night and the Mean Fiddler's Subterranea club, bringing over talent from the US and promoting local talent.
Ras's now respected radio career began to develop and in 2002, Ras launched right into the radio scene with his 100% homegrown music show on BBC Radio 1Xtra. Ras hosted 100% Homegrown for almost ten years, right up until early 2011, during which he received a well deserved Best Radio DJ award in 2004 whilst generating a massive following. Ras is a pioneer for British music and his other most recent show, broadcast every Sunday morning on Radio 1, focused on exposing the best UK beats.
Over the years Ras has presented a range of music shows including Channel U, Trouble TV and MTV Base, has been selected to appear as a judge on endless panels for new music and UK talent, as well as hosting some legendary BBC Live sessions, showcasing the hottest acts in the UK black music scene at the world famous BBC Maida Vale Studios.
Ras Kwame's reputation as one of the UK’s most respected DJ's has been cemented by receiving four MOBO nominations and two consecutive Urban Music Awards.
